Promoting health, diversity, and breed tradition in future generations.

We complete extensive health testing for known genetic diseases that will impact the long-term health of the dogs we breed.  Above and beyond the breed club recommendations, we are not satisfied with the minimum.  When we incorporate dogs from different varieties all health concerns applicable to each variety become important.   Breeding for diversity brings health, but it also requires education and knowledge.

Together with an extensive network of diversity-oriented breeders, we share knowledge and lessons learned from all breeding programs.  This includes cooperative breeding plans and databases that pool current knowledge of the health concerns and databases.  We utilize the UC Davis VGL testing and its relevant database, BetterBred, in all breeding considerations.

The Poodle is at its heart a water retrieving family companion.  We look for potential matings that continue the long tradition of poodles in both water sports and home life.  Dogs with a more compact physique and stronger bone structure hold up better in sports and on a farm.  Commonly called a Klein poodle in Europe, we strive for breedings that produce adults between 17 and 21 inches full grown.  This often is accomplished through inter-variety, such as Mini Poodle to Standard Poodle, or by utilizing underutilized lines that may even have Toy Poodles in their background.

Beyond being water loving, Poodles are adept at scenting and sight activities.  They have shown great versatility in their long history being both deployed in war time, Search and Rescue, mushers in the arctic cold, service dogs to the disabled, and constant companions in home life to name only a few.  At ThunderRun our mission is to continue that legacy.

Breeding Schedule

With Legacy in mind we have consciously decided to breed only when there is a compelling reason to do so.  Unlike other breeders that have regularly scheduled breedings and often have puppies available, ThunderRun takes more time to learn each potential breeding dog's personality and see if they stand the test of time.  We often do not breed before a dam is 4 years of age, to ensure longevity or allow her to complete competitive events.  A dam that is breed will need time to grow, whelp, and nurse puppies and well as recovery time before entering another competition.  This is not how every breeder makes their decisions but it is how we make ours.   If you are interested in being part of our Legacy then you will have to be patient.  Scheduled breedings will be listed on our homepage, ThunderRun FB group, AKC Marketplace, and several FB poodle diversity groups.  Often these are co-breedings where we own the stud but all owner selections will go through the dam's owner.

Because the diversity poodle community is well connected we have the ability to look into lots of potential matings before we act.  There are several breeders that we can recommend if you would like to see what may be available sooner within this network.  Each of these breeders focuses on their own breeding goals.

Cost

Our puppies will range between $3000 and $4500 depending on several factors.  One of which is the diverse nature of the stud dog and requirements to complete a breeding.    There is a standard cost to raise a healthy, well socialized puppy.  Only when there is an added medical cost to complete the breeding does the price increase.  There is no added cost for colors, genders, or aptitude.  Prices are not based on the whim of the market or fads.  We are not a volume breeder and do not make a living from our breeding program.

ThunderRun offers the added benefit of an open return policy.  Should you be unable to care for your dog for any reason it can, and should, be returned to us.  This safeguards the health of all dogs we produce and gives you added insurance for any of life's unpredictable events.  We bred a dog that we would always want in our home.
